Gholamreza Medadian – Scholarly Biography

Dr. Gholamreza Medadian is a researcher in Translation Studies and Linguistics, a professional translator and editor, and the assistant director and director-in-charge of Applications of Language Studies. He is currently a faculty member at Hazrat-e Masoumeh University, specializing in translation quality assessment, translator education, corpus-based translation studies, and modality in Persian.

His 2015 study introduced a summative model for evaluating undergraduate translations, balancing objectivity and manageability. He has also investigated translator training in distance learning, as seen in his 2014 article Educating Autonomous Translators in Distance Learning: A Neglected Area in the ‘Map’ of Translation Studies. His research on modality in Persian explores epistemic and deontic expressions, subjectivity, and objectivity in linguistic structures.

Dr. Medadian has a strong interest in corpus-based translation studies, employing linguistic corpora to analyze translation patterns and quality. As a professional translator and editor, he applies his research expertise to ensure high-quality academic and professional texts. He has also examined orthographic and punctuation errors in translation trainees’ work and the influence of English-Persian translational contact on academic writing. Dr. Somdev Kar is an associate professor of Linguistics at the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar. He completed his MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Hyderabad (India) in 2004. In 2005, he moved to the University of Tübingen in Germany to pursue doctoral research in Linguistics under the supervision of Prof. Hubert Truckenbrodt and received his PhD degree in 2009. His doctoral research is in the area of Optimality Theory (Phonology) and Distributed Morphology, and with a focus on the syllable structure of Bangla. Later, Dr. Kar worked on the phonology of a group of Tibeto-Burman languages of Sikkim as part of his post-doctoral research at CIIL, Mysore, India.
